How to make your home smell calm (without it smelling fake)
You light a candle or spray something and the room smells like a shop for ten minutes, then of nothing. Or it's so strong it gives you a headache.

Start with fresh air, not scent
Scent can't cover stale air. Open windows for ten minutes each morning, wash cushion covers and throws, and empty bins before adding any fragrance.
Damp rooms and bathrooms often smell musty. Run the extractor fan and let towels dry fully.
How much oil to use
Less is more. In most home diffusers, five or six drops in the water is enough for a living room. If you can smell it strongly from the doorway, it's too much.
Pick one scent and use it for a couple of weeks. Lavender suits the evening, eucalyptus feels fresh in a stuffy room, and sandalwood or vanilla feel warm.
Small bottles vs. a larger bottle: the value side
Many oils come in 10ml bottles that run out quickly. A 100ml bottle costs more upfront, but at six drops a session it lasts a lot of evenings.
The dropper also matters for value: when you can count the drops, you don't pour away a third of the bottle on one evening.
Safety around skin, kids and pets
Essential oils are for diffusing, not for putting on skin undiluted, and never for swallowing. Store bottles closed and out of reach of children.
Some oils aren't suitable around cats, dogs or birds. Diffuse in a ventilated room, keep a door open so pets can leave, and check with your vet.
If you're pregnant, have asthma, or anyone in the house gets headaches or breathing problems with scents, check with your doctor first and stop if anyone feels unwell.
