How to create an evening ritual that actually ends your day
The kids are in bed, the dishes are done, and you're still on. You scroll until midnight because it's the only time that feels like yours, then wake up tired.

Why a cue works
Your brain learns from repetition. If the same small action happens at the same time every evening, it starts to mean the day is over.
The cue should be easy and pleasant: dimming the lights, making a herbal tea, lighting a candle.
A 20-minute ritual
Set a rough time, like 9pm. Dim the main lights, put your phone on charge in another room, and light the candle.
Spend the twenty minutes on one restful thing: a shower, reading, stretching or writing tomorrow's list so it leaves your head. Don't use it for tidying.
Blow the candle out at the same point every night. That's the signal to head to bed.
Choosing a candle for your space
In a small bedroom, a gently scented candle is enough. In an open living room, you can burn it a little longer before the scent fills the space.
Soy wax tends to burn slower and more evenly. On the first burn, let the top melt to the edges so it doesn't tunnel.
Cheap candles vs. a better candle: the honest value
A cheap candle can smell strong in the jar and of very little once lit, and many tunnel and get thrown away half-used.
At $104.45, this is a treat, not a basic. It makes most sense if you'll use it as a nightly ritual or as a gift. If budget is tight, the ritual still works with lights down and a cup of tea.
Candle safety
Never leave a candle burning unattended or fall asleep with it lit. Keep it away from curtains, bedding, children and pets, on a heat-safe surface.
Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn and burn for no more than a few hours at a time. Ventilate the room and stop using scents that give anyone headaches or breathing problems.
