How to finally declutter a small bathroom

You tidy the bathroom on Sunday and by Wednesday the counter has disappeared again. The problem usually isn't space. It's that nothing has a fixed home.

Curated by Lisa, founder of By Dejuls

Step 1: Clear out what's expired (free)

Before you buy anything, empty the counter and the cabinet onto a towel. Most small bathrooms are full of things nobody uses any more.

Look for the small open-jar symbol on each product (for example 6M or 12M). It tells you how many months the product is meant to last after opening. If you can't remember when you opened it, or it has changed smell, colour or texture, let it go.

Throw out empty bottles, dried-up samples, hotel minis you'll never use and duplicates of the same thing. Old mascara and liquid eyeliner are the first to go.

Step 2: Sort by how often you use it (free)

Put back on the counter only what you used in the last seven days — for most people that's three to six things, such as cleanser, moisturiser, toothbrush and deodorant.

Weekly items (masks, scrubs, hair treatments) go in a drawer or the cabinet. Spares and backstock go under the sink.

Anything you're unsure about goes in a box under the sink for 30 days. If you didn't reach for it, donate it or bin it.

Step 3: Check your space before you buy an organiser

Measure the clear counter depth from the back wall to the edge, and the width of the space beside the basin. Leave a gap around the tap so splashes and soap don't sit on your things.

Measure the height up to the mirror, cabinet or shelf above. Open any cabinet door and check that it won't knock what's on the counter.

Check your drawers: are there any, how deep are they, and do they open fully? Under the sink, look for pipes that block part of the space.

Keep everyday items within easy reach on the side you naturally use. Things stored on your weaker side quietly stop being used.

Drawer boxes or a multi-layer organiser?

If you have at least one free drawer, start with what you already own: shallow boxes, mugs or small containers to divide it. This costs nothing and keeps the counter completely clear.

If you have no drawers or they're already full, but you do have height above the counter, go up instead of out. That's when a multi-layer organiser is worth it.

The Cream Color Cosmetics Box comes with two, three or four layers, with optional drawers, from $64.20 (up to $90 for four layers). Choose the fewest layers that fit what's left after Steps 1 and 2 — not the most.

Skip it if: your bathroom already has a deep mirror cabinet with room to spare, or you've cut down to only a few items. In that case, a small tray is all you need.

Sort by time of day, not product type

Morning things on one layer, evening things on another. You'll stop hunting through everything twice a day.

It also shows you what you own, which is how you stop buying a third face cream.

Keep it clean and safe

Wipe the counter and the organiser once a week. Damp bathrooms can grow mould on the bottom of bottles, so let things dry before you put them back.

Keep medicines, razors and cleaning products high up or locked away if children live in or visit the home. Don't store medicines on an open counter in a steamy bathroom unless the label says it's fine.

At the end of the day: rinse the basin, wipe the counter, put everything back. A two-minute reset survives bad weeks.

Quick answers

How do I organise a bathroom with no counter space?

Start by removing what you don't use every day, then move storage upward or inward: drawer dividers, an over-the-door rack, or a slim vertical organiser in a corner that stays clear of the tap's splash zone.

How long do opened cosmetics last?

Check the small open-jar symbol on the pack, marked 6M, 12M or similar — that's the months it lasts once opened. Throw out anything that has separated, changed smell or texture, regardless of date.

Do I need an organiser or just a declutter?

Declutter first. If your daily items fit in a drawer afterwards, drawer trays are enough. An organiser is worth it only when daily items still crowd the counter.
